What is Dry Needling

Have you heard of Dry Needling? Is it something that has been recommended to you by a friend or family member? Did you know that whilst it is provided by a range of differently skilled practitioners that Dry Needling is actually one of a large number of Acupuncture Needling techniques.

Dry Needling is a name given to a set of needling techniques that are used for releasing stiff and knotted muscles. Very strong needle insertion and manipulation is used in order to cause a muscle twitch response, to disperse muscle tightness and pain, or release a trigger point.

Who can provide Dry Needling therapy?

Acupuncturists receive training in many different needling techniques including those which have been referred to in recent years as Dry Needling or needle therapy. You will often not see Acupuncturists list Dry Needling as a stand alone service (and whilst it is a technique they are highly skilled and qualified to provide), it is only one of a large range of needling techniques Acupuncturists are trained in. This means that an Acupuncturist is not limited to only using one technique and in fact may use a range of needling techniques in order to achieve the quickest and longest lasting outcome for you.

Unfortunately, with the rise in popularity of Dry Needling there has been a rise in underqualified and unregistered practitioners utilising this technique and advertising it as a discrete service. In fact, there is no requirement to have even done a Dry Needling course!

Dry Needling is a term most often used by health professionals whose primary training is in an area other than Acupuncture or needling (eg, massage therapist, chiropractor, physiotherapist, myotherapist). It is important to find out how much training and experience your therapist has in needle therapy as some have had as little as one day of training. The majority of Dry Needling courses are simply a weekend of training.

Why is Dry Needling good for you and your body

What is Dry Needling good for?

Dry Needling is best suited to athletes and sports people who have musculoskeletal injuries.

Not all conditions are best suited to Dry Needling and as it is a very strong and sometimes painful technique it is not always chosen as the first method of treatment. Your Acupuncturist will utilise the most appropriate treatment method for your condition to achieve the quickest relief and best long term outcome for you whilst always trying to maximise your comfort and relaxation during your treatment.

Some of the conditions that respond well to the Dry Needling technique include:

  • Overuse Injuries / Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)
  • Chronic pain
  • Sports injuries
  • Strains
  • Muscle spasms or tightness
  • Rehabilitation from surgery

What should I expect after a needle therapy treatment?

Because Dry Needling is a very strong treatment it is common to have some localised soreness from the needles. This usually passes after a good nights rest and is best relieved by applying a liniment or a heat pack. We recommend drinking plenty of water after a Dry Needling session to ensure your body can quickly mobilise inflammatory compounds away from the area(s) of tenderness.

I’m not sure if Dry Needling is the right treatment for me?

Dry Needling is not the best treatment for all conditions. Your fully qualified Acupuncture practitioner will only ever use Dry Needling where it is safe and necessary to do so. After a comprehensive assessment your practitioner will select the method/s of treatment that will achieve the best outcome and maximise the most comfort and relaxation for you.

In some cases Dry Needling can cause symptoms to worsen. If you have any of the following, please notify your practitioner as Dry Needling may not be the safest and most effective form of treatment for you. This will enable your fully qualified Acupuncturist to determine if Dry Needling is appropriate and if not, to select a more appropriate treatment option for you:

  • low blood pressure
  • low iron
  • postural hypotension,
  • dizziness or tendency to pass out
  • ‘adrenal fatigue’ or run down
  • sick with a cold or flu
  • have an acute infection
  • bleeding disorders
  • heart arrhythmias,
  • abnormal heart beats
  • pregnancy
    less than 3 months
  • postpartum
  • breastfeeding
  • worried about the pain of needles
